Ah yes Ray Nurney, he was a dour sort of chappie, nice though.
Purple crayons were always in short supply. My favourite was blue as
that was what you used to colour sleet/snow obs as. :-)

If you haven't drawn up (using gridding) charts at 10, 5,2 and 1mb you
haven't lived. I was in the Stratospheric section in Met O 20 when I
first went to Bracknell, and that was part of my job...

And when I started, you had one biro issued and had to hand that one in
when it ran out before getting a replacement. Hard to use a biro when
it's got a padlock and chain on it!
