I wonder if this is just the sensor getting confused. Do automatic sensors actually even record weather - if so I'm assuming the vis is so low in the heavy snow that it thought it was foggy?


I think that does happen. On the NWS METARs, visibility reduced to fog levels by precipitation often appears as fog / freezing fog (depending on temperature), I think.

Total rainfall equivalent recorded at New York Central Park in the whole event seems to be 19.8 mm.
