Southwest news after the 10pm news on BBC1 (I was in Devon
yesterday).

Yes, it's a favoured spot for big wave watching for a good reason! The headland the waves often break right over protects the the cove to a considerable extent from the wind as well as the sea. In fact, in a SW gale the cove's a very sheltered spot - windwise.
