Piers is far from being an idiot though. he has convinced many people
to part with good money for worthless forecasts. He's actually very
clever.

Not really, it just means that the people who give him money are even
more stupid than he is.

He's found a way to persuade a lot of people to give him money. Piers may be many things but 'idiot' isn't one of them.
