Default January 2005: Synoptic Overview

Thanks for this detailed summary. I cannot remember a January when its
weather was dominated so persistently by a High to the west of Ireland. Can
you tell us when was the last such occasion, please?

The Icelandic Low was split and appreciably deeper than
normal: the main centre, 990 mbar, was located in the
northeastern Norwegian Sea at approx 72N 10E, with
a second centre, 995mbar, near Cape Farewell. The
Azores High was much more intense than usual and
displaced ENE-wards, centred near Corunna at 1029
mbar. There was a shallow low, 1016 mbar, over
southern Italy.
The mean flow over the British Isles was from
slightly north of west (280 deg), and was considerably
strong than normal.
