Are these cold outbreaks a normal feature of Greek weather in the
winter, Yannis? Or is it a more recent phenomenon associated with
strong westerlies over the Atlantic and high pressure over Europe? I
haven't studied it much myself, but Greek winters now look rather more
interesting than British ones. But I might find summer in Athens a bit
much. :-)

Tudor, I guess that most of the things people in here know of greek
winters -or summers- derive from my posts -but I might be wrong.
I've always remembered snow falling at least once a year here in SE Athens
and I always remember myself being jealous of parts of the country further
north. My 13 years average for this site is 10.8 days of falling snow per
year (one snowflake seen to fall) but it's quite changeable from year to
year.
The north of the country -or even the highlands of Crete- are quite
different and snow is frequent; I guess it's just that it never reaches your
ears.
