Yes, I initially thought it strange for Microsoft to commit themselves to a final version of Windows. I suppose it's all part of a now clear policy to try to get everyone onto one version, so they don't have to provide updates to multiple versions, currently 7, 8, 8.1, Vista & XP.

The fact is that after a few years of updates the cumulative difference is likely to be as great as between some previous versions, but at least there will only be 1 'version' to update.
