Default Sensor problem on (Fine Offset / Watson / Clas Ohlson) pattern AWS station

After replacing the 2 AA batteries in the sensor of my AWS it is no longer connecting to the main unit. I get the 4-second red light after replacing the batteries but it will not synchronise.
When I replaced the 3 AA batteries on the main console the station remained active - I wonder if it draws a current from the PC it is connected to?
Anyway do I need to disconnect the lead from the PC to enable the console to 'switch off' and reset?
The unit has been working, uninterrupted, since May 2013 - so it has had a good run in terms of battery life.
Is it possible though that because these units are relatively cheap it is now a good idea to get a new one.

Apart from windspeed measurements I can continue my daily readings using manual instruments
