Surely it wasn't 1 AD, as that wouldn't occur until a year later.
That being said, Christmas Day should be the start of the New Year,
so we've all got it wrong. Well I probably have anyway.

1 AD was set as the year in which Jesus was supposed to have been both
conceived and born, so that means that his birthday should be
celebrated near the end of the year. This also means he became a year
old at the end of 2 AD.

When (almost) everyone (not me) celebrated the new Millennium a year
early on Jan 1st 2000, the C-of-E had already celebrated Christ's 2000th
birthday a couple of years early, on Dec 25th 1999, when it should have
occurred on Christmas Day 2001.
