Perhaps I can 'trust' people and let them by without moderating? Or
maybe give them a couple of yellow cards before sending them off?

If the forum software you'll be using allows it, then you might be able
to "white list" certain posters that you feel you can trust, and accept
posts from them without moderation, whereas posts from others would
still have to be moderated.

The snag with moderation, if you are the sole moderator, is that if Real
Life intervenes (as you've alluded to in the bit that I've snipped) and
there's a delay of several days before you can get around to approving
posts, that will take away the forum's momentum and people are likely to
drift away.

I thought that I'd "saved" your original post, so that I could return to
it, later, but it somehow seems to have "time-expired" on my machine. So
I can't remember quite what the procedure was that you set out for
applying to join, but I'd like to be a member please. I can't promise to
remember to look in on the forum regularly, though. The great advantage
of newsgroups is that I have things set up so that new posts are
downloaded automatically, and once downloaded the habit of reading them
has become sufficiently ingrained that it doesn't need any prompting for
me to remember to do so.

Added later: I've found the reason why I couldn't find your original
post. It wasn't on this thread at all but on "From the ashes..."! Doh!
