Default Snow on Scottish Mountains

On the BBC 6.30 forecast it was stated that there had been snow today on
the highest Scottish mountains, by that I'm assuming above 4000ft.
I recall that snow has been seen here at every time of the year apart
from the last week of July when it is just a little bit *too* warm for
it to happen. Therefore today's snowfall can be seen as highly unusual,
but not unprecedented.
