Default Sat image of fall streak holes over UK 8Nov16

Here are 2 images from the MetopA satellite overpass of the UK at 1010z,
showing widespread fall streak holes in a sheet of Ac near 15000 ft
altitude. The cloud top temperature of the Ac sheet is near -25C. Overhead
at Wokingham there is copious virga thick enough to hide the stratiform
cloud sheet producing it and the associated holes. Optical effects
(parhelia) have been observed when the virga is in the right position to
produce it.
The Chilbolton cloud radar shows the Ac layer thickening with time, at 1100z
top 17000 ft, base 10000 ft, all but the top few hundred feet will be ice
precipitation.
