Default November 2016 at Bablake in Coventry

An historical perspective of the climate statistics
for Coventry during November 2016

Temperature

Last year, November 2015 (9.5ºC) was the mildest November in Coventry since 1994, which itself was the warmest November month in Coventry (10.1ºC) since before 1892.

There is a recent trend of milder than average Novembers in Coventry, with three of the six warmest November months on record in Coventry in the past seven years (2009, 2011, and 2015).

So November 2016 (6.0ºC) has bucked this warming trend, with our coolest November in Coventry since 2010 (5.1ºC).

Looking back through the archives, we find that only five November months have been colder than this year in Coventry since 1977 (1985, 1988, 1993, 1996 and 2010). To put November 2016 into a longer term perspective however, there have been 36 colder November months in the city since 1892.

•30th the coldest night of the month (-4.1ºC) recorded the lowest November minimum temperature since 2010

(-8.5ºC). Only three November nights have been colder than this in Coventry since 1989.

•29th the lowest grass minimum temperature of the month (-8.9ºC) was the lowest in November since 2010 (-14.8ºC). Only three November nights have recorded lower grass minima than this year in Coventry since 1977.

Rainfall

This has been the third wetter than average (66.2mm) November in a row in Coventry with 82.4mm of rain recorded at Bablake, 32% higher than normal. It has become the eighth wetter than average November in the city in the past 12 years.

Only 7 November months have been wetter than 2016 in Coventry since 1986 (1992, 2000, 2002, 2008, 2009, 2012 and 2014).

Looking at the month as a whole, we find that 94% of the monthly rainfall total fell in the middle third of the month between the 10th and the 21st November, with a relatively dry spell early and late month.

•21st the wettest day of the month (23.0mm) was the wettest November day since 2012 (37.4mm). Only four November days have been wetter than this since 1954 (1977, 1993, 2007 and 2012)

Sunshine

Last year was the dullest November (37.4hr) in the city since 1984 (36.3hr); only November 1984 had recorded less November sunshine in Coventry since 1968. It was the dullest month at any time of year in Coventry since December 2002 (35.1hr).

Dull November months had almost become a thing of the past until last year; the first decade of the 21st century recorded 78% more sunshine than a hundred years ago, with a record 108.5 hours in 2006, for example.

So November 2016 re-established this sunny trend, with 76.2 hours of sunshine, 15% higher than the 30-year city average from 1981 to 2010.

It was the sunniest November in Coventry since 2010 (80.3hr); only five November months have recorded more sunshine than this year in the city since 1989 (1996, 2005, 2006, 2007 and 2010).
