When I got home this evening and saw a maximum of 19.0 on my (admittedly
non-standard sited) thermometer, I presumed there was something wrong with
the sensor. It wasn't even particularly sunny.

A similar experience here. The max of 12.7° was the second highest I have
recorded in February since moving here in 2009 yet it occurred on a very dull
day with a persistent low overcast and with spells of rain and drizzle. Not at
all the sort of day on which an unusually high temperature (for the time of
year) seemed likely.
