BEIJING, July 20 (Xinhua) -- Gao Yu planned to take the train from
Beijing to Tangshan in north China's Hebei Province on Wednesday
morning. But when she arrived at Beijing West Railway Station, she found
her train was among many that had been delayed due to heavy rain.

"We were told to wait until further notice," she said. As people
gathered in the station waiting room, rain leaking in through its roof,
more trains were canceled.

Beijing was hit by heavy rainfall rarely seen in years on Wednesday,
with traffic on the rails, roads and in the skies disrupted.

The capital raised its storm alert to orange, the second-highest of
China's four-tier warning system, as the city's meteorological station
forecast that the rain would continue until Wednesday night.

As of 4 p.m., the average precipitation in the capital reached 154.9 mm,
with the maximum precipitation of 392.4 mm recorded in the suburban
district of Fangshan, according to the meteorological station.
