Default Typhoon Hagibis in Japan: colossal rainfall

What is even more staggering is that half a metre of rain in a day is
nowhere near record breaking

Half a metre would be about 20 inches, so only about twice the record
rainfall for a day in the UK. (I'm afraid I'm still more comfortable
with inches than with mm, especially for such large amounts.)
