Default 12Z Model Summary - Friday 17th October 2003

High pressure (1035mb) lies to the northeast of Iceland and ridges
southwards into the Atlantic. Low pressure (1010mb) lies in the North
Sea. Winds across the UK are light to moderate northerlies. Showers or
spells of rain are likely in many parts, wintry in the north and over
the hills. Temperatures will be close to or below normal in many
parts, with night frosts. Beyond this there is little change with
further showers, wintry at times over the hills, and a large Atlantic
High builds again.

High pressure (1035mb) lies to the northeast of Iceland and ridges
southwestwards into the mid-Atlantic. Low pressure (1000mb) lies to
the east of the UK. Winds across the UK are mostly moderate
north/northwesterlies. Many parts will be see rain or showers, perhaps
wintry over the hills and in the north. The driest weather will be to
the south and west. 850hPa temperatures range from -7C in the north to
-4C along the south coast of England. Forecast 2m temperatures range
from +5C over the Scottish Highlands to +9C in the far southwest, with
the possibility of some sharp night frosts. Beyond this low pressure
is never too far away so further showers are likely, wintry on the
hills, whilst a large Atlantic block re-establishes itself so staying
rather cold.

southwestwards into the mid-Atlantic. A weak low pressure (1020mb)
lies in the North Sea. Winds across the UK are mostly light and
variable in direction. Many northern and eastern parts will be see
showers, these wintry over the hills and in the north. The driest
weather will be to the south and west. Temperatures will be close to
or just below normal, with night frosts. Beyond this most parts stay
on the cold side with showers at times almost anywhere with low
pressure close to the south, and hints of another arctic outbreak
towards the end of next week.

High pressure (1040mb) lies over Greenland, with a secondary centre
(1035mb) over Iceland, which ridges strongly southwards into the
Atlantic. Low pressure (1000mb) lies over the Baltic Sea. Winds across
the UK are mainly light to moderate northeasterlies. Showers are
likely to affect most windward coasts, these showers turning wintry in
the north and over the hills. 850hPa temperatures range from -7C in
the far north to -4C in the far south. Temperatures will be close to
or below normal in many parts, with night frosts. Beyond this the
northerly winds continue, bringing further showers and remaining
rather cold, with an Atlantic High building again later.

over Europe. The UK lies under moderate winds, mostly from a northerly
direction. Most areas will see sunshine and showers, wintry over the
northern hills. Daytime temperatures will be close to or just below
normal in most areas - with night frosts.

Summary:
A rather chilly outlook, with most parts set to see colder northerly
winds for a time. These winds will bring showers to many areas, wintry
over the northern hills. Night frosts look set to become more
widespread. As we go towards the end of next week, the Atlantic High
looks set to build once again.
