It's the fourth totally overcast day in a row here, with low cloudiness
and
sick drizzle and light rain intervals. Things are more severe in the west
and the north of the country, where rain is very intense and much more
persisting. It is also snowing on the northern highlands above 1800 m (ca
5900 ft), while some lowland areas of northwestern Greece didn't get
warmer
than +6C yesterday (Kozani). 150 mm of rain were recorded at Ioannina from
Wednesday to Thursday, while Kerkira (Corfu) has recorded 115 mm of rain
since October 15th (trees were uprooted at the Alepou area there early
this
morning because of the high winds). Thrace, in the northeast, has been
reporting thick fog during the last day, while only closed type ships are
allowed in the northern Ionian sea. The south and far east of the country
has been significantly drier and warmer under mostly clear skies.


Thanks for your comments, Yannis. The combination of high sst and
unstability obviously does the trick.
The sst around Greece don't differ much of the rest of the Med; according to
this site:

Things are due to change, though, as we're going to be at the 'other' side
of the continental low, thus getting southerlies that should bring
unseasonably warm -even hot- weather. Temperatures could exceed +30C over
northern Crete due to the local Foehn effect.

Hmm -- these things should be arranged better :-). When you compare the
current situation with another cold plunge event -- december 31 1978. A huge
depot of cold in the far north; high pressure over Greenland and Scandinavia
and a low over Holland; far more north than its now:-). Not much triggering
needed to get a cold plunge down over NW Europe. And Greece had a far more
comfortable westerly flow :-)).
