This evening I spotted my first (for this winter) gritter. Came through the
village at about 7.00pm. and then about 15mins later in the other direction.
Definitely dropping salt, yellow lamps going, the whole business.

No wonder my Council Tax is so high.

Hi all,

It always amazes me when people see gritters and then start asking why
they are salting, do they know something we don't, etc. What they are
doing, simply, is abiding by the law which states that they must, as
far as is reasonably practicable, allow safe passage along a highway,
which includes clearing snow and preventing ice forming.

The majority of salting in the UK is to prevent hoar frost or ice
forming, especially in the south, where snow is fairly rare!

Road temperatures often, in winter, fall below zero even if air
temperatures don't. So the council aren;t just wasting tax payers
money, they're trying to stop you from skidding on ice on cold nights.
