Brilliant. After assuming it was going to be cloudy all night, I looked
out after midnight and it had cleared. Bands of green were stretching
right across from east to west. As I watched, intense reds developed,
and a corona (?). I've tried to capture the show as far as is possible
with a camera.

and yes, it was that bright!!

this links to a thumbnail index. The larger images are uncompressed
jpegs to keep pixellation to a minimum, but they are only 500 x 375 so
shouldn't take too long for those, like me, who don't have the luxury of
broadband.....

Excellent. Like you, I had given up hope of seeing anything last
night, but I went out just after midnight. There was a bright
searchlight effect to the west, with the pink directly overhead! Not
as bright as yours, but then I probably have a lot more light
pollution
