There are lifts (or at least one, I think!) on the slopes of Helvellyn
in the Lake District as far as I'm aware.
Indeed there is - I saw it in operation once. It is (or was) just to
the south of the summit of Sticks Pass (goes from Glenridding to Stanah)
at about 2,500'. Approximate GR is NY 342 180. I've had some splendid
winter days up on Helvellyn, the best being a round of Swiral & Striding
Edges when the crest of Striding Edge was hidden under a thick layer of
snow. It was somewhat easier (given I was wearing plastic winter boots
& step-in crampons) than in summer conditions. It was also incredibly
cold by the time I got back to Glenridding, and there was an 'incident'
when a cornice dropped on some lads trying the gully to the S. of
Striding Edge. A silly thing to do really - the snow above about 300'
hadn't been through any thaw/freeze cycles so the cornice was not very
well attached. They were lucky - no serious injuries - but I spotted
someone else walking out past the line where the next section was going
to drop. I have a photo somewhere with their footprints, taken from a
vantage point that clearly shows their folly.
