The final figure of 14.9C at Aberdeen airport was the highest
December max there since 1994 (15.1C). The station record
is 15.7C on 27 Dec 1983.
And I remember 27 Dec 1983 very well.
I walked up a hill (Scolty) near Banchory (to the SW of Aberdeen) in
absolutely beautiful warm sunshine.
Aberdeen area winters are second to none in Britain. Warmth like that one
day, yet a few days later, cold, crisp with blue skies and 50 to 100 cms
of
lying snow.
I do agree. I worked there intermittently between 1976 and 1985. One
other aspect of winter I remember (which may well no longer be present)
was the smell of domestic smoke concentrated under an anticyclonic
inversion on an otherwise clear and very frosty evening in the city ...
I hadn't smelt that since childhood. The other smell, the fishy one,
worst on still summer days, was ghastly.
