Like most Alpine communities they're trying to reforest their steep unstable slopes because trees look better and don't need so much maintenance. -- Sue |

The medium-term objective is to get trees or scrub to grow on the steep slopes wherever possible, because they look better and need less maintenance. Until the reafforestation programme can show results, fences protect the young trees and also the village underneath. After being cut down centuries ago they could not grow back. I've read that some alpine towns with a remaining upslope forest ban anyone from even walking in them. jim |
