The horizontal lines on the mountainsides are rockfall fences. Like
most Alpine communities they're trying to reforest their steep unstable
slopes because trees look better and don't need so much maintenance.

Rockfall/avalanche fences. If you see them close up they're massive.

The medium-term objective is to get trees or scrub to grow on the steep
slopes wherever possible, because they look better and need less
maintenance. Until the reafforestation programme can show results,
fences protect the young trees and also the village underneath.

Pfew, thanks. For a moment I thought the Inca's migrated and build their
cornterraces on your slopes..;-)

The trees stopped/deflected avalanches. After being cut down centuries ago
they could not grow back.
I've read that some alpine towns with a remaining upslope forest ban anyone
from even walking in them.
