MIAMI, Florida (AP) -- Tropical Storm Nicholas was drifting slowly across the Atlantic Ocean on Sunday and was not expected to strengthen or affect land. Nicholas had sustained winds of 50 mph early Sunday. Forecasters said it was drifting toward the north-northwest near 2 mph. Nicholas is expected to "hold its own for a little while and then weaken," said Richard Pasch, a hurricane specialist at the National Hurricane Center in Miami. At 5 a.m. EDT, Nicholas was centered about 870 miles east of the Leeward Islands of the northeastern Caribbean. It is the 14th named storm of the Atlantic hurricane season, which began June 1 and ends November 30. Copyright 2003 The Associated Press. All rights reserved.
