![]() Those useless gnomes oughta find some more meaningful employment b/c their ain't no weather folks. Just remember this: Nature offers no free lunch. If you all would love the "beautiful weather" to continue on and on,then prepare yourself for limits on your water use. I,for one, hate global warming-you will too. |

Just remember this: Nature offers no free lunch. If you all would love the "beautiful weather" to continue on and on,then prepare yourself for limits on your water use. Presumably this refers to the Tuesday *night* forecast which called for showers or rain in Seattle and Portland (the latter up to a quarter inch) on Wednesday, but which hours later resulted in only 0.01 inches in Seattle and almost totally sunny skies (0.00 inches) in Portland? I did hear a rather interesting point about the amount of precip this winter: it's not that there's been SO little (many times we've seen as little or less), it's just that when systems have arrived it's almost always also been warm, accounting for snow packs down at 20-30% of normal. This coincidence is what's been of concern. |

That's interesting; Central Park in NYC is going on its 4th consecutive
snowiest winter on record -- your Global Warming doomspeak rings hollow on the east coast. We may have a drought this year, but it's no anomaly. The weather *is* beautiful, isn't it? It's hard to beat Oregon when it's not 40°, gray and raining. |

... Yeah, no kidding. We had the 2nd driest spring in Oregon's history in 1976 and back then it was pretty damned severe. I don't recall anyone screaming "global warming" back then. It's amazing that people take any odd weather patterns and blame it on something - El Nino, Global Warming, and god knows what else, and never bother to take the entire world's weather into consideration (that's what the word 'global' means, alarmists). What's not to blame on El Nino? Meteoroligically it's been the stated cause of the "ridge" that's setup over the last several months shunting systems away from us. It's not exactly a mythical phenomenon. Was the term "global warming" even on the map 30 years ago? If so, we certainly don't know as much about it as we do now. Speaking of your spring of 1976, Portland records show that after about 13" of rain fell over the first three months of the year, about 5.25" fell in the spring, which may sound low until you realize that it's only 2" below normal.... In short, just glancing over the record, that wasn't close to the second driest. Perhaps it was the rest of the state that saw the dryness. about that. Have one dry winter/spring and everyone screams "global warming". We had it rain clear into July for many, many years in a row (which is unusual) but no one mentions nor remembers that. But have one 3 week run of unusual warm weather and everyone screams global warming and it's constant talk with everyone. It's obvious: since rain into July (unless it's flooding rain) doesn't cause a laundry list of problems that the lack of rain and snowpacks do. I don't need to include that list here, since it's been mentioned countless times over the last few days. I see people gush about 10 minutes of sunbreak during an all day rain event, but never mention the 15+ hours of rain. 15+ hours of rain (actual rain, remember?) would be notable and would probably cause some flooding. That does get mentioned. When Seattle and Vancouver got their day or two of big rains last fall (and the fall before that -- 5" in 24 hours in Seattle set a record), it caused lots of problems and got lots of press. Of course, both those events entirely missed Portland, as the more serious systems in the NW tend to do. The epicenter of rain events tends to be Vancouver, and Seattle is close enough to get most though not all of that, while Portland sometimes get its own systems but most often is feeding off the scraps of the northerly systems. |

Why are people's memories so selective? We had record flooding in 1996, about 3 years after a drought we had in the early 90s, but no one remembers or remarks about that. Have one dry winter/spring and everyone screams "global warming". We had it rain clear into July for many, many years in a row (which is unusual) but no one mentions nor remembers that. Far too many negative aspects. There are so many reasons this isn't a good thing: 1) Air stinks and is yellow/orange (say what you want about LA and most of California's big cities - LA, San Diego - having 'nice weather', they're smelly & ugly) Here's a hint: LA and San Diego aren't the only sunny places, and the polution problem is geographical, not because of the sun. 2) Increased traffic EVERYWHERE Why? Oh, wait, is it because people are out enjoying themselves? 3) Constant droning of lawnmowers Yeah, right. So what is it, dead lawns from the drought or flourishing lawns from the sun? 4) Having to hear 'Oh, it's such a wonderful day out' all the time Man, what a grouch. 5) Dead/dying lawns and plants Ever heard of sprinklers? 6) Increased pollen count/allergy problems As opposed to the mold and mildew problem during the wet weather. 7) Increased insect population (wasps already are appearing, folks) Caused by a nice wet winter in most cases. The drought actually lowers the insect population because it decreases theur food and habitat. 8) Neighbor kids with loud car stereos with their windows down Man, you are really stretching. 9) More people outdoors late at night and keep others awake Oh the horror! People having fun. 10) Increased costs in electricity and water Not exactly dependant on sunny weather. 11) Dry air, cracked/chapped lips constantly By some chapstick. If you like this kind of weather despite all of these reasons, kindly STFU about it publicly so as to not rub it in for those of us who hate it. You guys even whine when it's plain sunny and it's not a drought so I say Have a nice day! There's almost nothing more annoying than those mindless people who gush on and on about sunny days. Man, you are one dreary little *******. Do the lights automatically dim when you walk into the room? |

Well, there it is.Creeks are drying up, river levels are way down, the snow pack is at less than 20% of normal, hatchery fish are endangered, meteorologists, farmers, land, water and forest management engineers, and ecologists are all concerned not to mention the local governments which will have to dal with the water shoortage. But Dave says there's no drought, no water shortage, so we should all relax. Boy that's a load off my mind. I bet their world revolves around your opinion of the world, Dave. Man, you are one dreary little *******. Do the lights automatically dim when you walk into the room? Do you ever get any information from any source that doesn't have a motherboard and hard drive attached? Have you stepped outside at all this year, Dave? |

Deep blue skies with puffy clouds, 80 degrees and low humidity. Penetrating sunshine that just makes your skin feel electric. It's the kind of day you just want to get naked and run around in the sprinklers! Yippeeee! |

![]() 1) Air stinks and is yellow/orange (say what you want about LA and most of California's big cities - LA, San Diego - having 'nice weather', they're smelly & ugly) Here's a hint: LA and San Diego aren't the only sunny places, and the polution problem is geographical, not because of the sun. Air usually stagnates because of heat, which is caused by the sun. Ever wonder why clean air action days happen durring sunny periods? 2) Increased traffic EVERYWHERE Why? Oh, wait, is it because people are out enjoying themselves? Yes, and that brings out the general populus in the Portland area who are generally very selfish and inconsiderate. 3) Constant droning of lawnmowers Yeah, right. So what is it, dead lawns from the drought or flourishing lawns from the sun? Both! 4) Having to hear 'Oh, it's such a wonderful day out' all the time Man, what a grouch. Not at all. I like sunny days. I like rainy days. I like a balance. But when I hear mindless societal programming repeated in a "rain=bad/sun=good" stance repeatedly from sun lemmings, that's irritating to no end. 5) Dead/dying lawns and plants Ever heard of sprinklers? Which leads to increased water costs and use. 6) Increased pollen count/allergy problems As opposed to the mold and mildew problem during the wet weather. Funny, haven't had that problem - ever. But it sure beats suffering 6 months out of the year EVERY YEAR. 7) Increased insect population (wasps already are appearing, folks) Caused by a nice wet winter in most cases. No, it's caused by weak winters that don't kill off the insect larvae, so their numbers are much greater. I'm already getting wasps under my eaves. The drought actually lowers the insect population because it decreases theur food and habitat. Yes, and I'm not having an issue with the drought. 8) Neighbor kids with loud car stereos with their windows down Man, you are really stretching. Come live on my block for a while. No stretching about it. 9) More people outdoors late at night and keep others awake Oh the horror! People having fun. Inconsiderate people making enough noise to keep their neighbors awake is OK, huh? Geez, that's stupid. Couple that with people who sit out on their decks and smoke cigarettes, and the rest of the neighbors have to smell that horrid smell. 10) Increased costs in electricity and water Not exactly dependant on sunny weather. The word is "dependent", and you will find a definite correlation between extended periods of sunny weather and increase electricity and water costs. If you like this kind of weather despite all of these reasons, kindly STFU about it publicly so as to not rub it in for those of us who hate it. You guys even whine when it's plain sunny and it's not a drought so I say nothing more annoying than those mindless people who gush on and on about sunny days. Man, you are one dreary little *******. Do the lights automatically dim when you walk into the room? I already tried reason and logic on him, Neil--it was like trying to saddle up a centipede. Besides, he lives in Phoenix--99% sunny weather is all he knows. |
