As of this moment, hurricane Wilma continues a north-westerly heading
towards northern Gulf coast ... ie. New Orleans, Mississippi, etc. So far the hurricane has traveled much slower than anticipated, and the sharp right-hand turn has yet to happen ... perhaps it will never turn, but rather continue a more northerly heading towards the northern Gulf coast and totally miss Florida. I'm surprised there is basically zero discussion in the news media of the possibility of the sharp right-hand turn not happening... The only blurb I've heard anywhere is that some oil drilling companies in the Gulf Coast region are very concerned and taking precautions, but am not clear if there are referring to rigs, etc near Florida only and/or elsewhere along the gulf coast. Most likely the forecast will be right, but the fact is the hurricane has so far been more intense, moved much more slowly, and more westerly than forecasted, which should make one wonder if the models are way off this time?... And if so, what do folks here peg the odds at - that is what are the odds of the hurricane continuing more northerly and missing Florida completely? ... less than 1%, 1% to 5%, or even better than that... Welcome thoughts. Ron Bennett |

Odds of missing Florida are 2%.
Look at this satellite picture and see which way the winds are blowing: http://www.ssd.noaa.gov/PS/TROP/DATA/RT/NWATL/WV/20.jpg You will get a better explanation from a couple of weather-nerds blogs: http://www.weatherunderground.com/bl...ters/show.html Very graphics intensive: http://www.weatherunderground.com/bl...gory/show.html |

I wonder if Bush managed to make a few bob out of Katrina. He has for every other calamity he has been connected with. |

Well nobody knows what's in George's portfolio, but we know that Vice President Halliburton picked up 500 million bob in a no-bid contract to clean up storm damage on three military bases, presumably while the boys in uniform already on the payroll sip iced tea and watch. |

You mean that you have never heard about the various scandals concerning the Bushes and the Bin Ladens? And a fair few or the other things since? Presuming you over-indulge in whacky baccie and under indulge in current affairs, is there anything that anyone can do for you to bring you out of your darkness, that would improve your understanding of just about everything over the last few years without upsetting you unecessarily? |

I agree there are many far-fetched, even bizarre "conspiracy theories" out there. But the business relations between the Bushes and the Bin Ladens is hardly one of those. It is a matter of public record and elementary investigation. As for profiting from Katrina, Dick Cheney's Haliburton was first at the trough as usual. Legislation to reduce wages for reconstruction work was in place pretty darn quick to ensure more profit. Lucrative and wasteful contracts for cruise ships and expensive hotels were signed all while Katrina was still in the mainstream news. What do you suppose will be done when the media focus is elsewhere? -- Coby Beck (remove #\Space "coby 101 @ bigpond . com") |
