For a number of years, I was on the City Council of a bedroom community made up of large "ranch style" houses which in several neighborhoods were required by deed restriction to have cedar shake roofs ("appearance and conformity"). Our Public Safety Dept., cross trained police and volunteer firefighters, had a simple policy in those neighborhoods...Don't bother fighting the fire, just work to save the houses on either side, across the street and downwind..... It took an act of the Legislature to repeal and outlaw that sort of silly deed restriction put in place by developers to pump up price by adding elements of popular style. It seems incredible that a litigious people such as yours couldn't have taken the trousers off such developers. |

The city of Poway (hit real hard by this fire and the 2003 fire) there is mandatory 'green space' filled with natural vegetation running through the city. This makes it practically impossible to keep a fire out of the city. -- There can be no triumph without loss. No victory without suffering. No freedom without sacrifice. |

Apparently the underling that the chimp's gorilla had was referred to by Colin Powell's men as a "f___ing idiot". I can't recall his name. In the days of real empires the capital cities always had fountains built I suppose they knew where to put green spaces. Yet even Rome burned. That was due to another effing idiot though, wasn't it? There is no limit to the idiocy that can be perpetrated by complete idiots when given lots of power, untrammelled. |

They also had laws restricting the, ahem, "cultural heritage" of people allowed to buy houses in certain neighborhoods, also outlawed by statute. Most boilerplate real estate documentation contains some page to sign notifying the buyer that such CC&R restrictions are null and void. Dan |

Thanks, I needed a laugh. Then you'll enjoy watching: "No Plan No Peace The inside story of Iraq's decent into chaos". I found it upsetting and couldn't look at it. Perhaps you find that amusing too. You might be able to find the programme online with the BBC servers but it is badly DRMed -or may be. (I don't think I have their media player attached to my box as I think it is one of Microsoft/Verizon's spyware doodahs.) More funnies he http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk_politics/7064475.stm |
