Typhoons Aere and Chaba to harass region for days CNA , TAIPEI Monday, Aug 23, 2004,Page 4 The Central Weather Bureau reported unstable weather conditions for the nation on Saturday and forecasted the same for the next several days due to two nearby typhoons. Typhoon Aere, the 17th typhoon reported in the Pacific area this year, was centered less than 1,000km southeast of Taiwan as of 8am Saturday, moving northwest at a speed of 17kph, bureau meteorologists reported. Although Typhoon Aere is located nearer to Taiwan than Typhoon Chaba is, the weather forecasters said they would not be able to determine the extent of the impact Aere will have on the country until late yesterday. Nevertheless, Aere's outer rim was expected to bring sporadic downpours to western and northern parts of the country and afternoon thunder showers for central and southern parts yesterday. Meanwhile, Typhoon Chaba, the 16th typhoon in the Pacific area this year, was located about 430km east-northeast of Guam as of 8am yesterday, moving west-northwest at a speed of 21kph. Chaba is not expected to pose a threat to the country for the next two days, although it has gained strength to become a "medium" typhoon, the meteorologists said. High temperatures will persist, with highs of 35?C forecast for the north, 33?C for the central part of the island, and 34?C for the south. This story has been viewed 1339 times. |
