Default GFS file format

Dear all,

I would like to work with the GFS model data.
My source is : (it's maybe the only one!)
ftp://ftpprd.ncep.noaa.gov/pub/data/nccf/com/gfs/prod/

In subfolders, there are file named gfs.t00z.xxnn without extension.
I thought those files would be written with GRIB format, but it looks
it is not the case : I cannot open them with my GRIB tools.

What is the file format used for those files?
Is this mysterious format documented somewhere?

In advance, I thank you!
-Mathieu

What mysterious files do you mean? There are none named gfs.t00z.xxnn
if you mean xx to be the characters and nn to be a two digit number.
if xx = sf, instead, that could be a different matter. Anyhow, some
that I recognize following gfs.t00z. a
pgrbfHHH = pressure grib, forecast hour HHH (may be only 2 digits)
pgrbifHHH = pressure grib index
sfluxgrbfHHH = surface flux grib
sfluxgrbifHHH = surface flux grib index
sgrb2fHH = surface grib in GRIB2 format

there are also bfHHH and sfHHH. The latter is a binary file of gaussian
coefficients (rather than gaussian point information as in the grib files)
for pressure, temperature, and humidity on each model layer. Most
likely, you'll want pgrb instead of this.
