Oh my. I sense a science-challenged journalist and editor.

I sense a reading comprehension challenged Usenet poster. The City
Manager Steve LeBlanc is the one who said that, that newspaper just
repeated him. Other papers have also, they're just reporting on what
was said.

eyeroll

And if City Manager Steve LeBlanc said the world was flat,
the reporter/editor can just run with that without questioning?

I saw a Deutsche Welle news program that showed a couple of
politicians on the steps of parliament doing a door-stop press
conference. One politician finished by claiming that the day's fine
weather had been the work of the government.

I don't believe that anybody present, not even the journalists, took
that as anything other than a joke.

Journalists aren't always as stupid as they're believed to be. That
may well be due to the readiness to re-package press releases as
news, without analysis. Sometimes they can be unbelievably stupid.

Freedom of speech isn't the ability to say what you've been told to say.
