Why are there no/so few tropical cyclones east and west of South America?

Not really. It will become obvious once you look at a map of average
SSTs for those regions. Ah, this may help (tho I particularly despise
the projection):

Hint: there's lots of oceanic upwelling bringing up relatively cold
water by way of those eastern boundary currents.
