mysterious mechanism that exactly cancels its effect?

Not really, the issues that could make it a scam are the efforts
of some people to make money in some way without actually
providing a legitimate product or service for money solicited.

Nobody ever suggested that the honest professional
scientists who really believe in GW of any kind are the scammers,
so if a scientist not participating in indirect fraud willfully, then
they should not need to be vocally defensive about "scams".
