Thundery northern Athens

The past three days have been unsettled for much of continental Greece.
Athens itself didn't get much but the odd light showers; the northern
suburbs, however, had some quite heavy thundery showers...

I have been checking GFS charts for the following days and it appears that
the further building of the Scandinavian high (-ve vorticity from the Med)
as of the weekend...

There are hills to the upwind side of Faro - NW and N - so perhaps there
is
a föhn effect. That might also explain the extremely low RH - 6% at
12.00

Faro is on the coast - interesting that it is hotter than inland places
in
Portugal even with a wind blowing directly from the interior.

I've noticed the same happen here with northeasterlies....

Mediterranean in 'classical' times, i.e. during the Roman Empire - there
had to
be a virtual shutdown of trade in winter...
