Looks like you were under the back side of a thunderstorm. Those are
mammatus clouds.

Those clouds are caused by gravity waves.
Do a Google search and you'll find lots of information about them.

I just saw a trailer for the film "Day After Tomorrow" in which there
is a "global superstorm."
What's worse is that - and I'm trying to confirm this somewhere else -
the website that broke the news...
