Looks like you were under the back side of a thunderstorm. Those are
mammatus clouds.

Ripples in clouds

Those clouds are caused by gravity waves.

Do a Google search and you'll find lots of information about them.

Kestrel 4000 - thoughts?

I'm thinking of getting a Kestrel 4000 to augment my chase equipment this

is a "global superstorm."

What's worse is that - and I'm trying to confirm this somewhere else -
the website that broke the news...
