How do they measure rain

A couple days ago, it poured rain for at least six hours in the bay
area. I looked in wunderground.com for the total amount and it said
0.54 inches of rain. How do they measure that amount??

San Fran rain records

The past six weeks broke most rain records for the bay area. Is there

Thunder in different places

San Francisco has had freaky weather the past three weeks - sometimes
hail, which is unusual. Also less than 38F during the wee hours. Much
more rain than usual.

Beach weather - how to predict it

Suppose you wanted to calculate the temperature of the beach in San
Francisco and you lived about 30-60 from the beach. How would you know
if it was hot or cold at the beach, given your own weather...

Most weather sites have past weather but it's just for one day ago.

For example, where could I get the temperature for San Francisco on
Dec. 13, 2005?
