Default Milder than 2001?

Well only one week of October to go and no really cold weather yet.
Could this month end up warmer than 2001?

In these parts (Southampton area) I don't think we've had a day where
the maximum temperature has been below 15C yet - wonder if this is a
first for October? The daytime max has been consistently around 17-18C
since around the autumnal equinox, when there was a sudden end to the
summer-like temperatures which were typical of the earlier parts of
September.

Call me old fashioned but if this winter is harsh it's going to be short and
harsh. I can remember snow and sub-zero air frosts by this time of year in
the "olden days".

Well I suppose in two weeks time, theoretically, the weather pattern
could have completely changed, so four months of continuous cold
temperatures is still possible...

You must be about 150 years old then, or live at the top of a
mountain. I don't think I've ever seen snow in October (SE England)
but then I'm a paltry 62 and still learning.

I'm a paltry 55 and certainly still learning, but I do remember snow
showers around 1970-71 on October 6th,(Andover. Hants)remember the date
but not the exact year, I think that's called a senior moment.(must dig
out my old records from the attic)
Incidentally regarding this so called freezing winter, temperature this
morning at 0630 was a freezing 15.7C !!!

LOL, I remember October 2003, here is a note from my weather log for the 22nd

" Cloudy with rain from late AM. Rain turned to sleet and then wet snow
1600-1700. Sleet turning to rain in evening."

Whereabouts do you live? In my part of Surrey, October snow has always
been rare. The last instance I can recall was, I think, on October 31st,
1974, when a heavy snow shower caused a thin covering on the grass for
half an hour or so. It was followed by an exceptionally mild winter.

This might only be the warmest since 2001 (13.7C), but here in Coventry
the average October temperature for the first 23 days is 12.9C - IF
(and it's a big if) this warmth persists until 31st, then this would
turn out to be the 2nd warmest October on record (to 1892). Not a bad
month, but yet more ammuninition for the global warming alarmists!
