Default Mild Scottish Winter forecast

The Metoffice, who claim they are correct over 60% of the time, are
forecasting a mild winter for Scotland and Northern Ireland this year. See;
http://www.metoffice.com/research/se.../headline.html

Although the Scottich Gas Board are looking forward to sales of unneeded fuel
to their southern compatriots, the ski industry is less up beat!

Cheers, Alastair.

"There will be regional variations across the UK this coming winter. For
example, historically, when southern and central England experience a harsh
winter, it is quite common for parts of Scotland and Northern Ireland to have
a mild one."

They are predicting a hash winter for England so Scotland will get a mild one.
If the tabloids can use that type of logic why can't I :-?

Cheers, Alastair.

I think Alistair is referring to this...

"There will be regional variations across the UK this coming winter. For
example, historically, when southern and central England experience a harsh
winter, it is quite common for parts of Scotland and Northern Ireland to
have a mild one."

I can't think of a single winter that has been harsh in Southern and
Central England and mild here. Not one. I can hardly even think of a
winter month for that matter. December 1933 is about the only one that
springs to mind.

If they do get a "hash" winter in England, people are going to be on one
heck of a high for a few months
- let's hope it's a Siberian High!!! ;-)

Hi Steve
Nice site BTW.
One question the AVG wind speed is higher than the gusts - is this the wrong
way round ?
Cheers

Brian

Yes, fair point. It's because the 'average' is a 10-minute average, and
the 'gust' is simply the latest figure returned from the station at the
time the page was uploaded. It's probably not too useful a value, and I
should probably be showing the highest gust from the last 10 minutes -
is that what other software does?
