Prince Charles says climate change should be seen as the "greatest challenge
to face man" and treated as a much bigger priority in the UK. The prince unveiled his vision for the future of the environment, farming and food in an exclusive BBC interview. More and video interview at http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk/4380658.stm -- Nick in Northallerton Also @ www.whelan.me.uk And nickw7coc on Yahoo & MSN but I use http://www.trillian.cc as I like it better also on Skype and Google talk |

![]() "Nick" wrote in message news ![]() Prince Charles says climate change should be seen as the "greatest challenge to face man" and treated as a much bigger priority in the UK. That point was picked out by the BBC as the best sound bite, but what he was really saying is that we should do more to protect farming from globalisation. The theme he is emphasising is "food security". Although he may not be aware of it, if there is an abrupt climate change event, then the effect on the global climate will be to disrupt agriculture, and since we in the UK are a net importer of food, we will be extremely vulnerable. What he is also saying is we should protect the small farmers. This is important from the POV of abrupt climate change too, because if farming is locked into one or two large firms churning out the most economical crops, a change in climate could make these no longer viable. We need the flexibility and diversity to survive such a catastrophe, and only a multitude of small farms with a variety of skills can give us that protection. The general public, and some members of this newsgroup, are only now becoming aware that anthropogenic global warming is real. However, the threat, which was parodied in the film "The Day After Tomorrow", is from abrupt climate change. That will strike without warning, by definition! Cheers, Alastair. |

Right....
He'll not be using a helicopter anymore, then? Yeah, and all those Chelsea Tanks he and his entourage drive around in. His constructed wetland sewage treatment system at Highgrove is pretty nifty though. It must have been working away now for nearly 20 years. ________________ Nick G Exe Valley, Devon 50 m amsl |

Its amazing how all these celebrities and monied people (including the
royals) are able to preach to the relative poor about what should be done to conserve this, or protect that. They have the means to make token gestures and pronouncements, but, behind this front, continue in their own sweet way with their own extravagant lifestyles. I would love to incorporate eco friendly sewage disposal, and solar heating, etc. etc., but in my bog standard urban dwelling and with my meagre income, it aint going to happen. I don't need someone like pretend farmer Charles, with his immaculate macintosh and walking stick telling me what I should be doing, whilst spending what was probably originally my money on his look-what-a-good-boy-am-I schemes. What amazes me is how this was treated as 'news' by the BBC. It was the second story on the 6 O'clock programme. I guess they just wanted to blow their own trumpet as they had managed to secure the first interview with Charles in 10 years. Sure it's of interest to some people but then make a proper programme about it. 'News' it was most definately not. One non-expert pontificates about his views on a particular subject and suddenly it's second billing on the six O'clock news. What's all that about then? Col -- Bolton, Lancashire. 160m asl. |

You listened. If I were to go preaching where would I get the media exposure? I may as well stand at Speakers Corner for all the good it would achieve. Sounds more like sour grapes to me. They have the means to make token gestures and pronouncements, but, behind this front, continue in their own sweet way with their own extravagant lifestyles. Anyone can make a "token gesture". By no means am I wealthy, but I manage to compost and turn-down the thermostat. Not much I agree, but a start. I would love to incorporate eco friendly sewage disposal, and solar heating, etc. etc., but in my bog standard urban dwelling and with my meagre income, it aint going to happen. Then blame the ending of the current grant scheme for eco projects that will not be replaced for 7 months leaving a gap that may put the specialist manufacturers and fitters at risk. I don't need someone like pretend farmer Charles, with his immaculate macintosh and walking stick telling me what I should be doing, whilst spending what was probably originally my money on his look-what-a-good-boy-am-I schemes. The farm estate of the Duchy of Cornwall makes a profit and returns tax to the exchequer. -- Tim http://www.stopharlownorth.com/ |
