Asian Disaster. How to help.

Global aid organisations have launched urgent appeals for donations to
help survivors of Sunday's Indian Ocean earthquake disaster.

I just saw a site to send your cheques to on BBC 24 but I could not find
it on their website as of 06:30 (Thursday).

There is a list of charities on the above link from where you can find a
site to submit your donations.

I am sorry if anyone got the idea that I was opposed to submitting aid
in any way imaginable. (Even Col!) Of course I am not it is just that I
have had my eyes open for some time now.

Here is a list of Google News links on other disaster relief stories.
Note that there are some appalling scams going on all ready.

The site the BBC was recommending is: http://www.dec.org.uk

Cheques should be made payable to: The Tsunami Earthquake Appeal

There is also a phone number with this site: 0870 6060900

Just a word of caution.

http://dec.org.uk/

is apparently perfectly legitimate.

However, the donate box does not require the usual confirmation "are you
sure you want to ....."
So for sake of argument you intend to contribute £10 and in error you add an
extra 0, too late, you will find you contributed £100 with no apparent
opportunity to correct your typo.

I didn't get caught out, but feel it is worth a warning (and before anyone
wonders, I didn't give a mere £10)

Beware,

I saw many of such quick made so called 'charity' sites that seem to emerge
over the net these days, 'surfing' (sorry) on the aftershock of the
tsunamis.

Most of them are false, I mean, they come from individuals that hope to
scoop a little amount of the huge amount of generosity money for
THEMSELVES.

DO NOT BELIVE THEM, they will never refund official organizations that are
working over the place, they will keep the money for themselves, therefore
crooking you and the victims.

Instead, if you intend to help, go to OFFICIAL organisms, your local or
nationnal red cross antenna, the UN, and so on.

This is good advice. I know there must be some charities out there
that have been set up in good faith to help with this cause, but why
take the risk? And a proliferation of charities is inefficient anyway;
all those extra overheads......

My newspaper was full of ads for well known charities raising money,
as well as one run by the paper itself.
This is where my money is going to.
