THE MET OFFICE IS FORECASTING A LOW PRESSURE AREA TO CROSS NORTHERN SCOTLAND INTO SCANDINAVIA ON NEW YEARS DAY BRINGING STRONG WINDS AND HEAVY RAIN TO MOST PARTS OF THE UK. STRONG TO GALE FORCE NORTHWESTERLY WINDS TO ITS REAR WILL BRING FREQUENT AND HEAVY SNOW SHOWERS TO PARTS OF NORTHERN BRITAIN LATER ON NEW YEARS DAY AND DURING SUNDAY 2ND. ACCUMULATIONS OF 5-10CM ARE POSSIBLE, ESPECIALLY ON HILLS ABOVE ABOUT 200M ABOVE SEA LEVEL. THE ACCOMPANYING STRONG WINDS WITH GUSTS TO 60MPH IN PLACES WILL GIVE RISE TO DRIFTING OF LYING SNOW AND DRIVING CONDITIONS WILL BECOME VERY DIFFICULT LEADING TO SOME DISRUPTION OF TRANSPORT SERVICES. LATER SUNDAY NIGHT WINDS WILL EASE AND SHOWERS DECREASE BEFORE WARMER AIR SPREADS FROM THE ATLANTIC ON MONDAY, BUT THIS MAY BE PRECEDED BY A FURTHER PERIOD OF SNOW ACROSS NORTHERN SCOTLAND.
