Default Winter Blocking

Again the 31/12Z DT GFS and 31/12Z DT EC models continue to show blocking
over Scandinavia and western Russia with the jet stream shooting straight
down into northern Africa. This has typified December 2005 and to my
recollection hasn't occurred for quite some time.

The GFS ensembles show the operational run to be an outlier, a common
occurrence of late but the EC model tells a similar story. Maybe it's some
sort of mutation of the "Millennium" bug, but whatever it is, it is both
interesting and something to keep us entertained for the New Year.

Happy New Year to everyone here on uk.sci.weather and thank you all for
another year of stimulating discussions, numerous observations and generally
a brilliant read.

Regards, Joe
