Default It's a frost Jim but not as we know it !

Remarkable conditions here in rural Northants at least to me. At 8am with
full cloud cover it is -2.9c but no frost visable on the roof, cars or
grass.

Yes I noticed how dry the air is, yesterday, when the temp was at
freezing point or below zero all day, and no frost.

Similar in London. Temp was -1C and no condensation at all at 8AM. Still -1C
at 3PM. Brr! No wonder my fingers were icy cold by the time I'd biked it to
work and back...

Hmm the places I'd like to go today and yesterday are the tops of the
Pennines or Snowdonia. Looking at NOAA18 those peaks are sticking out above
the cloud into the warmer air above 1500 feet. The Larkhill sounding shows
it is as warm as +5C between 3000 and 5000 feet. That's one helluva
inversion! The real 0C line is way up at 10,000 feet, which is very high for
the time of year.

One day at RAF Wyton in 1963 we had surface temperature hovering around -10C
with +10 just above the surface. Forecaster was contacted by someone
worried about the water tower freezing. It was suggested to him that he
take a deck-chair to the top and enjoy the warm sunshine.
