The L and T are unusual enough here at the best of times but to have them in amonst this lot!!! Tides were incredibly high - we have had half fields under sea water !!!!!! before we get a chance to look in daylight -- a 3.9 m tide [normal spring tide] ---- looks like it was pushed to a 5 ish - floated a 12x 10 shed across a field and into a fence. !!! we have had waves lapping across our fields -- not seen in 14 years. Hopefully will find out the last time in the next week or so. Its been interesting !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! -- too interesting joy oh joy -- tomorrows tide is a 4.2 !!! [ highish springs here] with somebodies luck we will not have too much behind it by then We have already lost a polytunnel cover -- damn Its seems to be into standard howling gale now -- just the sort of night you don't sleep but not the sort you fear Hope others are okay --- I understand those who hate this -- I am with you there Not much sleep to be had here - despite all applications :~) Colin Youngs Brussels |

The sea behind him looked pretty wild with huge breakers crashing over the sea wall and lots of blowing spray, the road was flooded and some houses, too. His report reminded me of those live reports the US TV stations often broadcast when hurricanes make landfall! Good luck up there tonight to one and all. We've basked in 11 to 12 degree C temperatures and wind speeds a paltry half of those seen in Western Scotland today. Wet too, but at least it was mild ![]() -- Dave Solent Riviera. |

His report reminded me of those live reports the US TV stations often broadcast when hurricanes make landfall! Its really interesting cos for Oban Bay those seas were piffling -- the tide was very very high but a normal equinoxal will give more rubbish on the roadside. The bay was surprisingly sheltered --- honest. If there had been what can be produced in that bay there is no WAY JM could have been standing within 12 - 20 feet plus of where he was. If the wind was a few degrees different some places could have been really battered. Fortunately for Oban high seas are relatively common. Its when they are unforecast that you get the interest ---- boats on the road and cars in the water !"!!!!! Really interesting seeing it from here -- where the wind is unfettered !!!! We have had a 12x 10 shed float across the field into a fence and seawater feet above where it ought to be Lost a polytunnel too :~((( Good luck up there tonight to one and all. John Dann will probably know more. I hope you are all OK this morning, keep the reports coming. Thats good John Dann will probably know more. I hope you are all OK this morning, keep the reports coming. We are still here - it was definately interesting !!! Some damage but not too bad. [lost the plant centre polytunnel cover :~( , a tree down, rubbish blown in - all our stock is fine and all our poultry units completely unscathed] ] I would say it was probably on par with the 1992 - worse than the 1998. The thunder and lightening in the middle of it all at around 11.30 - midnight were rather a surprise. But the greatest notable part was the tide --- it was at least a metre higher than ever before. We have a tidal creek at the bottom of the fields. In a 3 - 3.5m tide [springs] there are a few places where the tide breeches the fence for a few yards. Last night we had seawater 20 - 50 metres up the fields for the whole length of the property. There is seaweed hanging on the fence to the top. For there to be even tide lapping at the base is surprising but to be that ! high is astonishing. http://www.kintaline.co.uk/ourlocality.html for anyone interested in where we are. There is supposedly a peg on one of the roads to the main beach which shows the extent of the tide when the Tay bridge disaster - it will be interesting to see if its higher than that this time. We will get some pictures later when we have cleared up - Its could have been a lot worse Hope everyone else is okay -- regards Jill Bowis Pure bred utility chickens and ducks Housing; Equipment, Books, Videos, Gifts Herbaceous; Herb and Alpine nursery Holidays in Scotland and Wales http://www.kintaline.co.uk Best wishes, |

If the wind had been in a different direction and actually driving into the bay as it often does Mr JM would have not been able to stand within many feet of where he was. All the properties along the seafront could have been seriously damaged. I was astonished at how calm the bay was on the Oban webcam earlier and the newscasts. Very very lucky From the seaweed level on the fences here it was at least a 5m tide - [should have been a 3.9m springs] - our fields were tidal - a 12x10 shed that was 50m from the highest ever tide mark we have known in 14 years floated half way across a two acre field ! The water level rose a further foot AFTER high tide. When we bought the farm there was no seaweed on any fenceline. -- today there is seaweed up to the top of the whole length. [as well as Obans rubbish on both sides of the fence] Its taking some getting used to. -- regards Jill Bowis Pure bred utility chickens and ducks Housing; Equipment, Books, Videos, Gifts Herbaceous; Herb and Alpine nursery Holidays in Scotland and Wales http://www.kintaline.co.uk |

Perhaps the weather has got so boring in SE England this winter that the BBC are after *anything* of interest :-) Will. -- " Visit Haytor meteorological office at http://www.lyneside.demon.co.uk/Hayt...met_office.htm " ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- A COL BH site in East Dartmoor at Haytor, Devon 310m asl (1017 feet). mailto: www: http://www.lyneside.demon.co.uk DISCLAIMER - All views and opinions expressed by myself are personal and do not necessarily represent those of my employer. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- |
