uk.sci.weather (UK Weather) (uk.sci.weather) For the discussion of daily weather events, chiefly affecting the UK and adjacent parts of Europe, both past and predicted. The discussion is open to all, but contributions on a practical scientific level are encouraged. |

I just missed the article on the OU about a mathematician called
Lanchester, whose work on statistics was used in the study of meteorology early in the 20th century. The tail end of it seemed quite interesting though. Anyone here got any pointers? -- Posted via Mailgate.ORG Server - http://www.Mailgate.ORG |

Two lines of pointers could start by searching the words: "Lanchester-Prandtl theory" - that is about aerodynamics "stochastic Lanchester equations" - that is about war theory. Please determine by your tail end, which line you want to follow. Best regards, Elena |

If you search using "Frederick Lanchester " in Google, one of the hits is 1910 LANCHESTER DOUBLE LANDAULET Frederick Willliam Lanchester the "Leonardo" of the Machine Age F.W. Lanchester - the visionary and Renaissance man http://www.lanchester.com/Behring1.html It says "As a young engineer who specialized in the development of gasoline engines, Lanchester's true interest was mechanical flight. To avoid being branded a lunatic, he wisely applied his considerable genius to an interim problem that he believed would advance the science of aeronautics." HTH, Cheers, Alastair. |

Too far over the line to be a genius though. His work on Aeronautics was contemporoary with Wilbur and Orville Wright. Funny how people will give credence to global warming without thinking about it. Pity no one will take a good look at my particular brand of lunacy. -- Posted via Mailgate.ORG Server - http://www.Mailgate.ORG |

Pity no one will take a good look at my particular brand of lunacy. Well, Lanchester was not a lunatic, he just feared being branded as one. My investigations into global warming have resulted in me being branded a lunatic, not just by you. I have explained before that when the Arctic sea ice melts, then the resulting rapid climate change will result in horrors of the same dimesions as those shown in "The Day after Tomorrow". So like you I cannot claim to be a genius. Expressing views such as those above makes me a fool, for fools rush in where angels (such as Landsea) fear to tread. Cheers, Alastair. |

I used to believe in plate tech and modern day seismisticism about 20 years ago. I dropped on one of the first textbooks on the subject. It was written in 1953 I think and although very basic was quite a good primer. I tried to teach myself a bit more from the Encyclpeadia Britannica and the like at my local library. It meant I had to learn from my own mistakes but I could only be corrected by logic and trial not by peer pressure and glossing over facts in time to perpare for tests and etc. The use of logic was the key. I had to try to make sense of it and without logic there is no sense. Two tennets: If you don't understand it you can not believe it and If you don't understand it it might be because it's wrong. Concerning global warming. There will be no appreciable change until all the ice has melted except for the fact that all the ice is melting, since the heat exchange is going to flatten every other curve. So any talk of strange weather patterns caused by global warming is likely to be error prone. And since these things occurred in biblical times in some cases in closely monitored time schedules not dissimilar to el nino effects and the absence of massive air pollution on today's scales.... well.. Then there is the "fact" that we don't know how the land uncovered by retreating ice is going to behave. Will the absence of ice cover allow depleted aquifers to recharge in those areas? They should fill very quickly given the chance, as natural funnels will be exposed (see pingos and ice lenses etc.) Note; I am not saying there isn't something very unusual going on, nor that we are not mistreating the planet desperately badly. If there is a god I think it best to presume he is very, very angry about it. I hope he doesn't know about swear words ![]() -- Posted via Mailgate.ORG Server - http://www.Mailgate.ORG |

wrote in message He seems to understand the word "tsunami"! His fault? You lease a house to unruly tennants and they chop the walls out to suit their furniture, hifi's and whatnot. Then blame the architect for the roof falling in on them when they had all their friends around partying? I was posting something to the effect that people should be on the lookout some 2 weeks prior to the event. Perhaps if I had been a little more industrious and more open to amelioration?
