uk.sci.weather (UK Weather) (uk.sci.weather) For the discussion of daily weather events, chiefly affecting the UK and adjacent parts of Europe, both past and predicted. The discussion is open to all, but contributions on a practical scientific level are encouraged. |

This latest Global Dimming 'end of the world scenario' Horizon programme
has me confused. How is this all going to fit in with the previous Horizon dire prediction a new Ice Age? This documentory was broadcast November 2003 ; has that scenario now changed? |

The term Global dimming refers to the thousands that watch it and believe it
! Actually its the most dramatic scenario since records began back in prehistory, yes 1965,just after the big bang ( if you got lucky) RonB "lawrence Jenkins" wrote in message ... Who knows?
The problem with science is there are arguments and counter arguments. We are warming up, something ten years ago I would have dismissed, the consequences of such changes is the problem. As far as the programme was concerned I was sceptical as to it being the cause of the sub-sahara drought, to many other factors comeinto play that interrelate and I still don't think we know all the equasions yet. I would have been far more convinced of the theory that this was the cause of the 70's/80's droughts in the Sahel had they provided evidence of lower SST's in the areas of ocean that had supposedly had prevented the African monsoon from moving northwards. The politico/media establishment seem to think they require an ongoing threat of Armageddon to maintain their primacy of influence over the population at large. The Horizon programme was the usual mish-mash of half baked pseudo-science picking up a few disjointed pieces of scientific data and cobbling them together in a spectacular extravaganza of extrapolation. Always beware of television programmes which describe contibutors with terms such as "..a trained biologist.." Trained to do what? These programmes would be funny if it wasn't for the fact that they encourage the more gullible of those in power to squander the nation's wealth by diverting so much of our techonological progress into so-called "precautionary measures" against these nebulous threats. I predict that, by 2105, mean annual solar radiation will have decreased by 0.07248% over today's level and mean global surface temperatures increaed by 1.046578 degrees C. These are the first two numbers that came into my head but that is probably as good a prediction as any of the present models. Sorry for the rant, but the debasement of science in the cause of scare mongering has been been threatening to lift my safety valves for some time. Regards, Alan Lisburn, Co. Antrim. |

Well there is always this :-) Oceans linked to Sahel drought http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/sci/tech/3191174.stm But the again maybe not :-( Cheers, Alastair. |

Funnily enough I raised that issue on another newsgroup only yesterday. Here it is with a reply from a climate modeller. Cheers, Alastair. wrote in message ... I agree with your general tenor here (though not with the assertion that sci are saying it *will* get colder; but what gets out into the media may be less nuanced). -W. -- William M Connolley | | http://www.antarctica.ac.uk/met/wmc/ Climate Modeller, British Antarctic Survey | Disclaimer: I speak for myself I'm a .signature virus! copy me into your .signature file & help me spread! |

Lawrence.
I watched last nights Horizon and feel that a lot of questions on my part were answered. The scenario of another ice age in the northern hemisphere is still alive and well, still as a result of global warming with the Gulf stream possibly either moving further south or slowing down so as to affect its heat transferring benefits. The only question I still have is, where do we go from here? We either pollute the hell out of our world to slow down the rate of global warming and suffer the consequences, or clean up our act and then possibly watch global warming spiral out of control.
