I lived just over the hill in Penistone for 8 years until a year ago
and
compared to other parts of the country, I think you have little to
complain
about.

Maybe. But I am used to December 1995/February 1994/etc.-type events.
(In fact, you know what I SHOULD - by rights! - be used to, but I will
not go down that particular road again. It is becoming patronising.)

Personally, 2003 and 2004 were rubbish here. 2004, for example, saw two
LIGHT snowfalls, which both soon cleared away, and 2003 likewise, plus
+ just 1 more prolonged wintry period, but still with fairly
underwhelming snow when in direct comparison with the 1990s - even the
1980s for that very matter! - plus 2001. 2002 bears not thinking about,
does it, Mr. Presutti, Mr. Partridge, Mr. Woodcock, Mr. Sarre? No.

Remember, you live on a HILL, I live on a SLIGHT SLOPE. That said,
however, it just goes up to the Castle Hill area - which did very
well out of 2003, I must concede, if not actually me.:-(

Get your bike out, take a tent and spend a weekend on Holme Moss!

I go hillwalking regularly. A friend of mine in Holmfirth - although I
did not actually see it - reported "sledgeable" 4 inches of snow up
that way!:-o

I wonder how much this weekend will deliver?

features - it looks as if the cold low-level air will flood down from
the north, but it will all be finely balanced as regards the
positioning/intensity of that small-scale low; certainly 'one to watch'!
Martin, What interests me is the shift from yesterdays GFS and UKMO
products to today's. In the good days (and they were) the T=48
southerly jet forecast over Newfoundland, (UKMO) would certainly
introduce a cold northerly over UK. (George's Theorem). Agreement
between models is fairly good at midday, but continuity from yesterday
is poor.
Fascinating stuff, but when you have to issue every night caution is
essential in these circumstances.
The small feature forecast to cross UK was first handled by the GFS on
1200 prog Monday, ignored last night now back again. Basically we don't
know. But the potential for some snow is there - exactly where again we
don't know yet.
Still - some interest.

Yes, I KNOW now that Brian and I have made amends and talked this
through, but this remains a good example of how *not* to do a "winter"
forecast - with various others from the likes of Tom Presutti and Gavin
Partridge more or less THE SAME. THE SAME!

Speaking of which, where is Tom? We've got some archive searching to
do.;-)

This is exceptionally disturbing. Such theories would get you lynched
or exiled in Eastern Europe. There, rain, and other capitalist

Whereabouts in the country are you?

The North-West, just east of the Pennines. We tend to miss out on BOTH
north-westerlies AND easterlies, although December 1995, February 1994,
and the other great, undoubtedly Scandinavian-induced events of the
last two or three decades have been quite kind of Huddersfield.
However, the 1999 - or was it 2000? - easterly produced pathetic WET
SNOW here and heavy snow for Brian Gaze and co. down in the South-East.
Hence, my big fear is that, with north-westerlies, like now, hardly
EVER delivering, easterly outbreaks may have lost their key "touch" or
edge in recent years. Maybe they are just not getting this far inland?

Huddersfield would never be described as being in the 'North-West'.
