Unlurking, briefly.
We were just west of Newcastle this pm, at Belsay, a stately home up a long and little used road, and I was briefly worried that we might have a slippery drive back. Snowed for about an hour, 14:30 to 15:30 BST. The fields were white with very wet snow. The car thermometer (which seems to roughly agree with forecast temps through the year) read +2 Driving back down the A1 the higher parts of the Tyneside connurbation had plainly had more snow than we had at Belsay. B-) There had been a heavy shower sometime between about 1300 and 1330. Just after 1400 it started again with heavy hail, that cleared into rain and by 1445 it was raining quite hard. Come kick off at 1500 the rain had turned to wet snow and then about 1510 it was really snowing hard and starting to settle. They played just over 20mins and the ref stopped the match, partly due to the weather but another major component to the decision was the condition of the pitch. It was a wash and doesn't drain well, players where sliding for many yards. Early on a two Sunderland players had a clash of heads (one having to go off later with a broken nose if I heard talk back correctly) simply because they couldn't stop. There was quite a bit of standing water and a layer of slush/snow so the moment the ball touched down it would stop very quickly. Fulham seemed to cotten onto this fact and stopped playing the modern long passing open game and switched to close ball control and short passes. IMHO this is why they scored, they took advantage of the conditions and Sunderland failing to switch method of play quickly enough. Later on both teams where playing the same tight, ball control, short pass game and there was some pretty impressive stuff happening. Couple of pics at the top of: http://www.howhill.com/weather/images/winter/index.html In the first one note the transition from the shelter of the stand roof on the left to the open to the sky area on the right. On the second you can see it starting to settle down the center of the pitch (it got a lot whiter than that) and the reflection of the lights in the standing water along the nearside touchline. -- Cheers Dave. pam is missing e-mail |

One of today's papers claims that this is the first Premiership game to be
abandoned by the weather! But we know better than that, don't we? Nottingham Forest v ??? Feb 96 I think, live on Sky and an awesome snowstorm. I'm sure someome can confirm. -- David Mitchell, 70m amsl, Langtoft, East Riding of Yorkshire. |

Hi, David, I think that was a cup match and so not premier league. Forest v Spurs Feb 1996 abandoned after 18minutes - heavy snow. Unfortunately for us NE folk who try to argue that we have good weather, the Sunderland v Fulham game abandonment yesterday follows the Newcastle v Charlton fiasco on 28th December when the game was called off because of snow on the roads with the ground virtually full and a playable pitch. Thanks to Dave Licquorice, btw, for the excellent account from the ground - you appear to have a job I would dream of! More snow showers today, veg patch still on hold! The good part of football is that it is a short day, with at least 90 mins of very little to do. On site at 0930 off it about 1800 for a 1500 KO. A "normal" day is more like 0730 1930 on the go nearly all the time with a strict hour for lunch. More snow showers today, veg patch still on hold! Lots of heavy snow pellet showers coming through again today, nothing hanging around for very long though. Ken, what are they doing to the A66 between Barnard Castle and Scotch Corner? All the trees and hedges are being felled are they starting work on making it dual carriageway? That'll be fun, I might have to revise my route to Leeds while they do that. -- Cheers Dave. pam is missing e-mail |

My best bet is No.1 son who works in the area and gets all the gossip, worst bet is Parish Council who never seem to be told anything! Dual carriaging sounds a good bet and an even better idea! Best wishes, Ken http://mysite.wanadoo-members.co.uk/copley We were in Team Valley Retail Park when it started to snow. On the drive north, you could see the showers sweeping in, with extensive virga. The precipitation was rain though until around kick off time like you say. Snowflakes were as big as 2p pieces at times, very wet and clingy. I remember the Forest/Spurs game quite well, it was a complete whiteout. The conditions were much worse than at Sunderland, with a complete covering of snow being the main problem. Officials couldn't see lines/each other and it was totally pointless carrying on. Improvement (aka dualling) Greta Bridge to Stephen Bank http://www.highways.gov.uk/roads/projects/5231.aspx Improvement Carkin Moor to Scotch Corner http://www.highways.gov.uk/roads/projects/5275.aspx Dualling Stephen Bank to Carkin Moor is only planned ATM. And looks to be stalled at the planning/consultation stage. The A66 at this point follows a roman road and this passes right through a fort at Carkin Moor. Oh well looks like we will be stuck with a 6.5km bottle neck for the next ten years whilst they sort that out. As the name Stephen Bank suggests, this is a hill and currently where the heavies struggle... -- Cheers Dave. pam is missing e-mail |

If your sone gets all the gossip what is happening to all the timber? There are an awful lot of mature hardwood trees going for the chop. I didn't see any great bonfires, a lot of chipping but only enough for the smaller stuff not big trunks and boughs. Lots of logs for fire wood? or just maybe timber for use/making things. -- Cheers Dave. pam is missing e-mail |
