But then of course you have a Windows machine with Office. (As you have
every right to.)

I am indeed running a Windows OS on my computer, but not MS Office. It
was (is) the standard at my place of work and I did not like it. I avoid
IE and OE also ... quite horrible.

There are other operating systems (and offices) out there. Mind you
getting into OOo's character map is a pain if you just want to be exact
on a newsgroup.
(OOo Writer Insert Special Character)

Yes there are (and I use Word Perfect suite on my own machines), but
with 95% of users running Windows (of one kind or another), and with
Apple moving over to Intel and supporting Windows XP on their machines,
there was a good chance I was providing usable information.

Always good to know the command for "OOo" though.

The point I was making remains true though the exact officeware is
another form of Microsoft office utility. The Accessories holds the
character data from such a Microsoft office.

I don't think it is available to machines merely fitted with a M$ OS.
They do excellent stuff all linked with the engine that powers IE. And
that strength is their weakness too.

The "Character Map" utility is part of the Operating System and one may
access it even if one has no other software installed, of any brand or
function.

Mmmm. It is.

I'm searching for it now. I have Office so it should show up.
Unfortunately I have a problem with it, so it is not allowing me access
to Character Map.

I'm almost certain it is a utility you have to have some sort of
Microsoft Officeware to run.

Character Map has nothing to do with any Office program.

Goto Control Panel - Add or Remove Programs - Add/Remove Windows
Components
select Accessories and Utilities then press button Details
select Accessories then press button Details
and you will find Character Map in the list. It may not be ticked in
which case it is not installed on your computer.
You can either tick it yourself or find someone to do it for you. This
will enable the installer to add the program for you.

P.S. Don't cross-post. You are likely to get your account pulled.

For what its worth, the character map is listed in the windows
components in the add/remove programs, accessories and utilities,
details - accessories.

It does not seem to be related to office.

I have windows XP professional and I don't have access to XP home, so
I can't check it.

All you need is XP.
%SystemRoot%\system32\charmap.exe

It would't find it on my system -which has two copies of XP home on it.
Which is why along with my duff Office, is why I'd thought it wasn't
part and participle to the OS.

Anyway thanks all, I have reinstalled it now.

As with a lot of the Windows programmes, it can be dragged to the Start
Menu and/or the Task Bar and of course, you can right click it to copy
a short cut to it for placing anywhere else. An altogether useful tool.

That I doubt I shall use all that often.
