Today is a continuation of what has been a very sunny period spanning over
the last week or so doon 'ere in the SW. Glorious! Not a cloud in the sky, calm and strong sun; the beach beckons! I suspect there are a few serious sunburnt casualties amongst the Grockles here for the half-term, especially with a sun index approaching 7. Currently at 08:45, 11.6C, RH 92%, DP 10.3C, 1031 mb (R), Wind calm, Rain last 24 hrs 0.0 mm. ________________ Nick G Otter Valley Nr Sidmouth, Devon 70 m amsl |

Hi Nick Glad you are enjoying sunny Devon! Could you elaborate for those of us not living in the south-west, what a "grockle" is exactly? I notice that you and Will both use the term (with a touch of amusement in your e-mail voice:-), and just wondered where the word comes from. I presume that you were a grockle when you lived in Worcester:-) Just wondered BTW it is sunny up here in Hatton too! cheers Steve, presumably a Grockle when staying in Graham's Cornish cottage! |

Steve, presumably a Grockle when staying in Graham's Cornish cottage! Steve, Grockle is a SW England term for a tourist (mainly by people who have only lived in Devon for 5 minutes!) In Cornwall they are Emmets. I enjoy sharing Cornwall in the summer, it's one of the things that makes the seasons in Cornwall so different. Wetsuit packed, just off for a swim. (The surf is currently about 3 inches - may get a swell by Tuesday.) Graham Penzance Holiday Cottage www.easterling.freeserve.co.uk/ |

Grockle is a SW England term for a tourist (mainly by people who have only
lived in Devon for 5 minutes!) In Cornwall they are Emmets. Ha ha ha! True! Though I must admit that I got the saying from a work colleague who has been living here all his life. The term "Grockles" comes from a film which was set in Torquay in the 60s, or so I was told (could be an urban myth, plenty of them around here). Currently at 12:00, 20.8C, RH 56%, DP 11.6C, Wind 3.5 mph WNW, 1031.3 (R). ________________ Nick G Otter Valley Nr Sidmouth, Devon 70 m amsl |

A rather insulting term used to describe those who contribute substantially to the economy of the region :-) I suspect that it is a term not used by the more enlightened residents of that fine part of the world. Norman If I would have thought it was an insulting term then I would not have used it, and now I am beginning to regret that I ever did, and in future I shall just call them 'tourists' or 'holiday makers'. As I said before, I got the term from a person who has lived here all his life. ________________ Nick G Otter Valley, Devon 70 m amsl |

Just ignore Norman's post, after all he's probably just some English Emett. Graham Penzance |
